The Pick: Boy Spyce announces himself with his tender new single.

Our Song Of The Week!

Mavin Records, Nigeria’s foremost record label, have once again activated yet another artiste. While the super label was founded in 2012, housing some of the country’s finest talents since its inception, their trend of activation, turning relatively young, unknown faces into superstars overnight started in early 2019 when their flagship act Rema was unveiled. Since then, they’ve unveiled a couple more young, talented acts who have gone on to become stars in their own rights.

Boy Spyce, the latest act to be activated by Mavin, however, slightly standouts from the pack. Before joining Mavin, the Lagos-born singer, real name Ugbekile David Osameke, was a relatively known face. Months ago, he went viral on the internet, after uploading a couple of his smooth but poignant freestyles done on different corners of the street. He looked and sounded ingenuous, his voice laced with a striking tenderness and sincerity. It’s this quality coupled with his adroit pen game that he mostly uses to craft his self-titled Mavin debut.

In truth, the 5-tracker, taken wholly, does not do much in separating Boy Spyce from the crowd. While his voice is undeniably distinct and soft, his delivery and the tape’s overall production are pretty run-of-the-mill. However, “Nobody”, the lead single, while sounding somewhat familiar, is a compelling earworm. Like his voice, the love-inspired record is extremely tender and affectionate. “Like the stars light up the sky / When there’s darkness in the night / You dey brighten up my life”, he sings warmly on the second verse. Here, he’s vulnerable, pessimistic and anxious all at the same time, singing extremely relatable lines like: “Been in love with you for years / But I act like we just friends, I don tire for pretence / Had to get this off my chest / After all of this i guess, you go start to snub my text”. These qualities, his tender, relatable and empathetic approach, are what makes “Nobody” special and could be what eventually catapults him to sky-high levels.
